Petition against Russian invasion of Georgia [please, sign]
Dear Friends,
You probably have been following shocking news about blatant Russian military aggression against the sovereign Republic of Georgia. Russian army has violated the internationally recognized borders and invaded Georgia, which has been on steady course to consolidating its democracy and joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Unfortunately, this aspiration of Georgia has turned out to be a major nuisance for the belligerent Russian government.
Despite the continuous tensions between the two countries and Russia’s permanent menaces, no one could imagine that Russia could start this reckless campaign against its neighboring country and openly invade it. Failing to stop Russia will send a message to Moscow that their brutality will be unpunished and will encourage them to further carry out aggression elsewhere in Europe. This is not only a defining moment in the life of Georgia, but also is a defining moment for the future of democracy in the region and in Europe.
Friends, I am sending you a link to the petition that I put together which I will send to the Leaders of the Free World and International Organizations. Please, take a couple of minutes to read and sign the petition.
YOUR SIGNATURE IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!

I can understand Russian anger over the incident last week (if it was an attack by Georgians that is), but the sheer speed of their invasion suggests to me that the whole thing was planned and they were waiting for an excuse to go in.
The logistic involved in preparing an armed assault with tanks and infantry etc along with air power indicate that russian forces were ready to engage the moment they were provoked.
I wouldnt be surprised to find out that the attack last week was arranged by russian forces somehow so that they would have an pretext to invade (similiar to WW1 start and invasion of Afghanistan).
I also question how the western military states could be so blind (why didnt spy satellites etc) show russian preparation for the invasion was taking place? Im betting they knew this would happen and are willing to let Georgia go merely to get something in return from Russia, sight unseen (such as cooperation on Iran). If this is the case I am am very depressed about our leaders and their unwillingness to confront Putin’s political machine, who is slowly but surely becoming just as bad as the Russian Dictators of the past. If we let Georgia go, I dont think it will help us in the long run. I believe we have to stand by our friends. Unfortunately though, politically the right here in this country doesnt have much power right now (Bush is a “lame duck” and the new US congress seems dead set against war period.
I pray that the conflict will be over quickly and that Russia shows some restraint. Its unfortunate that Russia seems to be locked in a mindset of violence, convinced every other country near it is an eventual enemy. I could understand that after World War II, given the horrors of the german attack, but not now in this day and age.

I hope that EU gets the message and that they will invest massively in alternate energy sources.
We have to starve russia back to the time they were broke. They are completely un-trustworty and, in spite of the fact that there are a lot of very smart persons there, populated by a large mass of analphabets and idiots. Actually, the USA also… But in the US, we don’t get poisoned for talking against W…
